Throughout history, military service has had a mutually transformative relationship with those individuals who elect to engage in it. Historically, citizen-soldiers have had a unique and vital part to play in the past, and this can inform, if not enhance, our intellectual understanding of the changing nature of society in the modern and contemporary world. The central organizing principle for mankind has been the partition of the world into local, national, and imperial states. Links of language, tradition, belief, and interest have created communities willing to fight for themselves and sacrifice themselves. The aim of the military institution is to exploit the human potential for organized, cohesive destructive violence under controlled and legal conditions, actions approved and underwritten by those whom violence and the social unit are entrusted.Over time, the community decides to create an exclusive or hierarchical elite trained to provide security from external or internal enemies. The elite's motivation and values evolve and become different from those of the community. This dual expectation determines military purposes and demands, as well as the dimensions, values, ethos, and behavior of the military organization within the society, which decided to organize, feed, and control its functions and operations. Military service was and is a source of social identity and social cohesion, with individuals being self-motivated and attracted by a combination of incentives such as honor, education, power, identity, origin, and a safe haven from difficulties—religious, political, economic, or humanitarian. These characteristics of military service modified the institution in terms of purpose, attracting individuals and defense organizations, transforming the military from a social reality of the community and subject to it into a societal institution that shapes and protects society as a whole.
